Tim Atkin Argentina 2020 Special Report – Tasting Notes

Tim Atkin’s 2020 Argentina Special Report has recently been published in full and we are delighted to share his tasting notes with you for our wines. We were very lucky to host Tim at the winery back in February when he made his annual visit to Argentina to compile his report.

Fabre Montmayou Grand Vin 2017                                                             95 points – One of the Best Red Blends

The Grand Vin is always the pinnacle of what Fabre Montmayou produces each year, a structured, age-worthy red of great concentration and balance. Made from a cuvée of Malbec with 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged in 50% new wood, it has the structure of a great Bordeaux and the fruit generosity of Argentina. Classy stuff . 2021-29

Fabre Montmayou Malbec Gran Reserva 2017                                        92 points

This scented, well-balanced Malbec all comes from around the Fabre Montmayou winery in Vistalba, the traditional heart of Luján de Cuyo. Lightly wooded in 20% new oak, it’s focused, refreshing and very easy to drink, with subtle tannins, sweet raspberry and strawberry fruit and balancing acidity. 2020-24

Fabre Montmayou Merlot Gran Reserva 2017                                         92 points

It was Merlot that attracted Hervé Joyaux Fabre to Patagonia in the  first place, drawn there by the thick skins that the variety seems to develop at that southerly latitude. This is a correspondingly  firm, sinewy style with 20% new wood, lots of sap and acidity, some herbal undertones and raspberry and red cherry fruit. 2021-25

Fabre Montmayou Cabernet Franc Reserva 2018                                   91 points

The stony soils of Alto Agrelo supply the grapes for this Cabernet Franc, which shows a varietal typicity that reflects Juan Bruzzone’s careful winemaking. Fine, leafy and aromatic, it’s an elegant, considered red with a touch of oak and layers of sweet raspberry and black cherry fruit. 2020-24

Fabre Montmayou Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2018                         91 points

Originally from Bordeaux, Hervé Joyaux Fabre knows a thing or two about Cabernet Sauvignon. This one comes from gravel and river bed soils in Perdriel and is a classic interpretation of the variety, with subtle, leafy aromas,  ne tannins, some bright cherry and cassis fruit, a hint of oak spice and good underlying texture. 2021-26

Fabre Montmayou Malbec Reserva 2018                                                   91 points

Even in a comparatively hot vintage, this textbook Malbec has managed to retain its freshness and perfume. Made in large volumes – and all the more commendable as a result – it’s very  oral and appealing, with a hint of older wood and pot pourri and red berry  flavours supported by textured tannins. 2020-25

Fabre Montmayou Barrel Selection Malbec 2018  2018                        90 points

Allen down in Río Negro is the source of this Malbec, grown on an escarpment, or “barda”, at 200 metres. Very much a southern style, it’s fresh, racy, green and well balanced, with attractive raspberry and red cherry fruit, lacy tannins and just the right amount of scented second and third use oak. 2021-24
