We are also incredibly proud as Hervé has been shortlisted for Red Winemaker of the Year by the IWC, the results will be announced at their awards in September. This is a huge achievement for the whole winemaking team. Congratulations!

We now have time to take a breath and recap all our success so far in 2024.

We have achieved new scores and medals from Descorchados, Tim Atkin MW, James Suckling, the International Wine Challenge, Vinous.com and the Decanter Wine World Awards. 

We are aways very proud of our achievements and incredibly grateful as these accolades give recognition to all the hard work that our winemakers, vineyard and winery staff constantly give. 

Our 2024 awards:

Our wines have been featured in Tim Atkin’s 2023 Argentina Special Report, they have been reviewed and scored by James Suckling, as well as gaining medals from both the International Wine Challenge and the Decanter World Wine Awards.

The highlight has been another trophy, Our Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Franc 2022 has been awarded 96 points and the Argentian Cabernet Franc Trophy from the IWC.

Fabre Montmayou Grand Vin 2019                                                           94 points

The 2019 Grand Vin is a blend of 85% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot (from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo) and was aged for 16 months in 50% new barrels. Purple in the glass. The 2019 has a complex aromatic profile of ripe plum, violets and subtle secondary notes of oak, white pepper, ash and tobacco.  It’s broad in the mouth with an expansive flow, milk concentration and refined tannins. The oak enhances the region’s customary volume, and the freshness ensures a juicy feel. An accomplished, long-lasting wine. Drinking window 2024-2059

Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2020           92 points
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Gran Reserva from Pedriel, Lujan de Cuyo was aged for 12 months in a fifth new barrels. Purple in the glass. The intense nose presents plum, blackcurrant, hints of ash and gentle bells pepper aromas against a prominent oaky backdrop. Broad initially, the flow is subsequently channeled by the juicy freshness and fine, reactive tannins, establishing a good structure for the year and variety. Drinking window 2024-2035

Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec 2020                                    91 points

The 2020 Malbec Gran Reserva from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo was aged for 12 months in a fifth new barrels. Purple in hue. The ripe nose presents hints of plum, white pepper and blackberry. It’s braod and creamy in the mouth with muscle lent by the region’s tannins against an oaky backdrop before the pleasant finish. A red with a classical, fruity profile. Drinking window 2022-2032

“Hervé Joyaux Fabre, born into a negotiant family in Bordeaux, came to Mendoza in search  of vineyards in the 1990s. A portion of this wine grows in the vineyard around the winery (the first vineyard Fabre purchased, planted in 1908). It has a persistent core of blueberry and coffee flavors initially obscured by elevated alcohol and sandalwood notes. That core outlasts the interference, though and a wild decant helps to muscle it open, bringing the fruit flavors forward.”

Top 100 Best Buys of 2022

In September we were in Antwerp with Global Wineries for their 18^th Wine Village. We were there with other wineries from all over the world, and it was the first time since the pandemic that everyone had been able to travel so there was an incredible atmosphere, with so many customers! We love this tasting, the people of Belgium are so friendly and welcoming. Thank you to all the Global team for such a well organised tasting and for a great few days!

Then in October we travelled to The Netherlands where Fabre Montmayou took part in the Wijnimport J.Bart wine tasting in the beautiful village of Edam. It’s not every day that we show our wines to customers in a church, but we met a lovely bunch of people who were all eager to taste and learn about our wines. Thanks to Henck and his amazing team, it was great to be there.

Fabre Montmayou Grand Vin 2018                                                                       96 points

When the winery’s owner, Fabre Montmayou, came up with the idea of making his Grand Vin in 1993, they selected the oldest vines on the property, planted in 1908 on the silty-clay soils of Vistalba, on the northern bank of the Mendoza River. The base is always malbec, the majority variety in their vineyards in this area. This year it’s 85% malbec, plus 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% merlot, and it was aged for 16 months in barrels. In a vintage that has produced wines of great quality and character, this one has not been left behind. It has the deep and succulent imprint of Vistalba wines, the ripe and slightly spicy aromas and flavors and round tannins. This is an ample and big wine designed for long aging.

This is from a selection of very old vineyards, some planted in the early 20th century in the Vistalba area, by the northern bank of the Mendoza River and on loamy clay soils. 100% of the wine was aged for a year in barrels, and the result is a wine that’s very deep in flavors and tremendous ripeness, but it also has an acidity-tannin balance that lends nerve and tension. It has slightly floral touches, but what predominates over it all are the succulent black fruits from a zone that’s traditional in wines from Mendoza, and this one interprets that brilliantly. Hopefully, real estate pressure doesn’t bring the area’s legacy of old vineyards to an end. It’s an inheritance that cannot be lost.

Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2019                        94 points

Fabre buys cabernet sauvignon grapes in the Agrelo zone in Luján de Cuyo, from vines that are about 50 years old. Aging took place in barrels and lasted about 12 months. This is a broad cabernet with ripe and voluptuous tannins and herbal touches, but most of all, it has ripe black fruit in a broad and enveloping red. After a while in the glass, floral notes begin to emerge while the tannins expand, offering tension in a wine for the cellar.

This is one of the great values for money in Argentine wine, especially with malbec from the traditional Vistalba zone grown on the alluvial soils on the banks of the Mendoza River. It’s from a selection of vineyards that are about 40 years old, and 60% of the wine was aged in barrels for a year, while the rest was aged in concrete tanks. The ripe and generous fruits of the Vistalba malbec are clearly evident here, along with aromas of violets. The palate is broad with pleasingly round tannins. An ideal wine for grilled meats.

Fabre Montmayou Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2020                                 90 points

As usual, Fabre’s Reserva line offers excellent value for money. In this case, it’s a cabernet from the Las Compuertas zone of Luján de Cuyo, from vineyards that are about 60 years old and planted on the northern bank of the Mendoza River. This is a cabernet with ripe fruit and a tremendous concentration of flavors and tannins in a special red to open for a Sunday barbecue or to serve by the glass in a restaurant.
